people. But having an awareness of this fact and knowing a little&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>bit about our health and food nutrition can help when it comes to&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>making wise decisions. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Many people struggle with food &#8220;cravings.&#8221; Studies tell us that&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>it&#8217;s fairly common for food cravings to happen at certain times,&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>quite often at around bedtime. Your guard may be down, you may&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>have had an unusually hard day, and off you go on your&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>not-so-merry way to find that tasty treat. Fatigue and stress&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>often combine to take their toll on the best of intentions. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>When food cravings are unconstrained, what starts out as a&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>bedtime snack quickly turns into a full blown feeding&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>frenzy&#8230;not something most of us fully understand or appreciate.&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>We head to kitchen and every other place where food can hide,&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>clearing a path as we go. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Most food cravings are not about satisfying a nutritional need or&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>imbalance. They seem to be more emotionally related, or God&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>forbid, are caused by plain old gluttony. Exactly why we&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>over-indulge is not completely understood, however our knowledge&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>about this subject continues to grow. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Listed below are some thoughts and ideas about food cravings: &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; If the food isn&#8217;t available, you can&#8217;t eat it! Empty the cookie&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>jar and keep it that way! Keep healthy food choices on-hand. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Recognize the feelings and emotions that lead-up to a food&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>craving. Do you have food cravings when you\u0092re bored, lonely, or&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>stressed? If you can identify a trigger, you can deal with the&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>emotion that\u0092s making you desire a certain food. Try to deal with&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>the triggers in the best way you can. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Sometimes, even recognizing that a craving is about to happen&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>doesn&#8217;t seem to help. Don&#8217;t beat yourself-up. There is always&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>tomorrow. Call a friend, make good use of your support network&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>and share your feelings with someone. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Get enough sleep. When you\u0092re tired, you\u0092re more likely to&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>crave things. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Never give-up. When you &#8220;slip&#8221;, press-in, bear-down, get a&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>grip, do whatever is necessary to re-gain control. Try to&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>practice restraint most of the time, but don&#8217;t get legalistic and&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>un-balanced in your weight loss approach. Think moderation and&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>not abstinence at all times! &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Understand that self-control and discipline by themselves,&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>won&#8217;t cut it! If you depend totally on yourself for control, you&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>will fail. Forming caring and supportive relationships is&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>required. If you do not currently have a support network, start&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>building one TODAY. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Exercise. It increases feel-good endorphins that cut down on&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>your cravings. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>activity every day. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Use moderation. Instead of stuffing yourself with every kind of&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>food hoping that your craving will go away, eat 100 to 200&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>calories of your &#8220;craved&#8221; food. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Substitute with low-fat foods and complex carbs. If you\u0092re&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>hungry for chocolate, eat non-fat chocolate yogurt. Try fig bars&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>or raisins for a sweet craving. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Never skip a meal. Eat every three to five hours. Try six&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>smaller meals or regular meals with nutritious snacks. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Understand that hunger craving are oftentimes stress related.&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>Practice other ways to treat chronic stress \u0096 a walk in the park,&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>spiritual connections, a cozy fireplace, baths&#8230;all these&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>stimulate neurochemicals that activate regions of the brain that&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>stimulate pleasure. Relaxation techniques may work by reducing&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>the psychological drives on stress output, which can be the root&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>causes of stress. Bottom line, substitute pleasurable experiences&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>for comfort foods. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Beware of certain medications. They can stimulate appetite.&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>Drugs used for the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>can be appetite stimulants. Other drugs, both prescription and&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>over the counter, may influence appetite as well. If you are on a&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>medication, and troubled by food cravings, discuss this with your&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>doctor or pharmacist. You may be able to find an alternative that&#13;&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>doesn&#8217;t send your cravings out of control. &#13;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Distract Yourself.
