Exercise<br \/>\nis vital to maintain good health and most of the time, the<br \/>\nbenefits of exercise far out-weigh the drawbacks. But if you<br \/>\nsuffer from a stressful or a depressive illness, exercise<br \/>\ncan actually make you feel worse. But how can this be?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve heard the following statement over and over<br \/>\nagain: exercise can help you to beat stress, or alleviate<br \/>\nanxiety or boost a depressed mind. This is only true in<br \/>\npart. Because many exercises can actually worsen these<br \/>\nillnesses. And even if you perform exercises that can help,<br \/>\nthese exercises will only help temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>The reason many people believe exercise to be helpful in<br \/>\ncombating stressful and depressive illnesses is because when<br \/>\nyou exercise vigorously for longer than 20 minutes, your<br \/>\nbody floods with endorphins. These chemicals give us a buzz,<br \/>\nand this is why it is widely believed that exercise can cure<br \/>\nstress, depression or anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re suffering a stressful or depressive episode,<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ll know that no matter how regularly you exercise, the<br \/>\nbad feelings return. The only way to beat these illnesses is<br \/>\nto treat the root cause: flawed modes of thinking.<br \/>\nExercise, though great for our bodies, simply doesn&#8217;t do<br \/>\nanything to address modes of thinking.<\/p>\n<p>When my anxiety was at it&#8217;s worst back in 2000, I exercised<br \/>\n4 times a week. For 2 days, I&#8217;d perform weight-training<br \/>\nexercises. These exercises are the type of exercise that can<br \/>\nactually make you feel worse because you have time to think<br \/>\nabout all of the issues and problems you have in your life<br \/>\nat the time. I&#8217;d also warm up and warm down on bike machines<br \/>\nor cross-trainers. Again, you can perform these exercises<br \/>\neasily so you can think about your problems.<\/p>\n<p>For my other workouts, I&#8217;d perform instructor-led circuit<br \/>\ntraining sessions. As you&#8217;re listening out for instructions<br \/>\nand performing sequences of exercises at a high tempo, you<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t have time to dwell on your troubles and worries. The<br \/>\nproblem is that once you stop exercising, you return to the<br \/>\nmodes of thinking which lead to stress, depression or<br \/>\nanxiety.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as my workout had finished, I&#8217;d perform the flawed<br \/>\nmodes of thinking, modes that made me anxious and depressed.<br \/>\nExercising did very little \u00fb if anything \u00fb to stop me<br \/>\nperforming these flawed thought processes.<\/p>\n<p>Do be aware of what&#8217;s happening when you exercise. Exercises<br \/>\nthat don&#8217;t require much concentration may have you brooding<br \/>\nover your troubles as you perform them. Jogging, walking,<br \/>\nexercise machines, weight-training are all examples of such<br \/>\nexercises. Instead, try ones that are more intensive or<br \/>\ncompetitive so your whole concentration is required.<br \/>\nCircuit-training worked for me, so did sports like soccer<br \/>\nand badminton.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to give yourself a period of time where you&#8217;re<br \/>\nnot thinking about your problems and worries. And of course,<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ll do your body a whole heap of good too!<\/p>\n<p>The point here is to understand that exercise can only<br \/>\nprovide temporary relief. The only way to find permanent<br \/>\nrelief from your suffering is to understand and address<br \/>\nflawed modes of thinking.
